B for Botevgrad: A Blend of Illustration and Animation
Project Overview
"B for Botevgrad" is a creative project developed as part of an exam for the Adobe Illustrator Advanced Course at SoftUni Creative. Inspired by Jack Daly's "Wanderlust Alphabet - A-E," this project aimed to celebrate the town of Botevgrad in western Bulgaria through a visually engaging and informative design concept. Additionally, the illustration was animated using Adobe After Effects to further enhance its dynamic presentation.
Objectives
The primary objectives of the project were:
- To create an illustrative and educational piece that highlights key aspects and landmarks of Botevgrad, including its history, geography, and cultural significance.
- To demonstrate advanced skills in Adobe Illustrator, particularly in illustration, typography, and layout design.
- To incorporate animation using Adobe After Effects to bring the illustration to life and engage viewers with dynamic visuals.
Role and Contributions
As the creator of this project, my responsibilities included:
- Conducting thorough research on Botevgrad's history, geography, landmarks, and achievements.
- Conceptualizing and designing the visual elements inspired by Jack Daly's "Wanderlust Alphabet," adapting them to reflect Botevgrad’s unique characteristics.
- Executing the design in Adobe Illustrator with a focus on detailed illustration and typography, and subsequently animating the illustration in Adobe After Effects.
Design Process
1. Research and Concept Development
The project began with extensive research into Botevgrad's cultural heritage, geography, and notable landmarks. Detailed information on the town's historical evolution and sports achievements served as foundational elements for the design concept. Preliminary sketches were created to ensure the design looked good before proceeding to the next step.
2. Visual Design
Illustrative Elements
Iconic landmarks such as the Arena Botevgrad, Hristo Botev Stadium, and geographical features like the elliptical valley and surrounding mountains (Western Stara Planina, Northern Balkan) were illustrated with a blend of stylization and recognition.
Color Palette and Animation
The color palette, inspired by Botevgrad's natural surroundings and sports teams, features vibrant greens, oranges, and yellows. Animation techniques in Adobe After Effects were utilized to add motion and interactivity to the illustration, enhancing viewer engagement.
3. Execution and Presentation
The design was created in Adobe Illustrator, utilizing advanced vector illustration techniques, patterns, and textures. After completing the illustration, Adobe After Effects was used to animate various elements, bringing the artwork to life with dynamic transitions and effects.
