Bwy Hir Trilogy Book Covers
Overview and Objectives
In 2018, as part of a student project, I had the opportunity to design book covers for the Bwy Hir Trilogy, Lori Thomas' debut series. The trilogy intertwines Welsh folklore with modernity, weaving a compelling narrative of love, betrayal, rivalry, and murder. The story revolves around the Triskele tribe, an ancient group consisting of giants, Druids, and Chosen, who gather for a significant ceremony during the winter solstice.
The primary objective was to create visually captivating book covers that encapsulate the essence of the trilogy and attract readers. The designs needed to reflect the fusion of ancient folklore with contemporary themes, emphasizing the central role of the Triskele tribe and the symbolic Triskele sign.

Role and Contributions
As the sole designer on this project, my responsibilities included:
- Conceptualizing and designing the book covers for all three books in the trilogy.
- Ensuring that the covers conveyed the themes and tone of the stories.
- Incorporating the Triskele symbol to highlight the significance of the Triskele tribe.
Design Process
1. Research and Inspiration
The project began with an in-depth study of Welsh folklore, particularly focusing on the symbolism and cultural significance of the Triskele. I also analyzed book cover designs in the fantasy genre to understand current trends and identify unique elements that could make the trilogy stand out.
2. Concept Development
Given the Triskele tribe's importance, I prominently featured the Triskele symbol on each cover, representing the tribe's three interconnected branches. Each cover blends ancient and modern elements to capture the essence of the book, reflecting the narrative's fusion of folklore and contemporary themes.
3. Design Execution
The covers of the trilogy visually narrate the journey of the Bwy Hir tribe, each capturing key elements of the story’s progression and reflecting the evolving themes and conflicts.
Book One
The first cover introduces the mystical world of the Bwy Hir with a dark green forest background and a glowing Triskele symbol, hinting at ancient secrets and ceremonies. Hidden silhouettes of a young male and female play central roles, symbolizing their importance in the story set in the Mountains of Snowdonia.
Book Two
The second cover emphasizes escalating conflicts with the Triskele symbol intertwined with the moon against a dark purple background. A hidden young woman's silhouette hints at her shadowed role in this tale of love, betrayal, and murder. The Triskele oath is broken, summoning powerful spirits led by Arawn, and Anwen Morgan, a pregnant Chosen, must be found to save the kingdom.
Book Three
The final cover depicts a male figure against a dark sky, symbolizing the trilogy’s dramatic climax. With the Triskele on the brink of collapse, Gwyn Morgan is sent on a quest to find his sister, Anwen, and her son. Arawn and Atgas drive the narrative towards a tense conclusion, where the fate of the ancient covenant and the land hangs in the balance.
Outcome
The book covers for the Bwy Hir Trilogy successfully captured the intricate blend of Welsh folklore and modern storytelling. The designs were well-received for their ability to visually convey the trilogy's themes and draw readers into the compelling world Lori Thomas created.
Symbolic Representation
Effectively incorporated the Triskele symbol, emphasizing the central role of the Triskele tribe in the narrative.
Consistent Visual Identity
Maintained a cohesive visual identity across all three books, while distinctly representing the unique themes of each installment.
Engaging and Attractive Design
Created visually captivating covers that attract readers and hint at the rich, immersive story within.
